Precipitation of Calcium Phosphates and Calcium Carbonates in the Presence of Differently Charged Liposomes

Liposomes (lipid vesicles) are often considered to be a versatile tool for the synthesis of advanced materials, as they allow various control mechanisms tune materials’ properties. Among diverse calcium phosphates (CaPs) and carbonates (CaCO3) using liposomes has attracted particular attention in development novel (bio)materials biomineralization research. However, preparation materials not yet been fully exploited. Most used have anionic and/or zwitterionic, while data on influence cationic limited. Therefore, aim this study was investigate compare differently charged CaPs CaCO3 formation. Zwitterionic 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC), negatively 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine (DMPS), positively 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-ethylphosphocholine (EPC) lipids were prepare respective liposomes. The presence during spontaneous precipitation affected both transformation kinetics, well morphology precipitates formed. most prominent effect noted DMPS liposomes, (nano) shell structures formed cases. obtained results indicate possible strategies fine-tune process CaCO3, which may interest production materials.
